Accessibility
Accessibility of an interface to users with disabilities is a concern of user centred design since it involves designing a system that is appropriate to the target audience. Userxp provides consultancy services and help identifying potential accessibility issues. There are a number of reasons for providing accessible interfaces for users with disabilities. These include:
Legal Action
There is legislation that applies to the accessibility of interfaces in a number of countries worldwide. In the UK the Disability Discrimination Act legislates rights for those with disabilities. Previously there was some disagreement whether this applied to the Internet or if services were available through other channels whether steps had to be taken. However, a code of practice released in May 2002 makes it clear that the disability discrimination act does apply to the Internet.
Growing Market
According to the Royal National Institute for the Blind there are 1.7 million blind and partially sighted people in the UK. There are also substantial proportions with motor and hearing impairments. As the population ages this proportion is likely to increase. This is clearly a substantial market.
Company perception
Being seen to discriminate against users with disabilities clearly is not an image that many companies would wish to portray.
